Dholkha district, a part of Janakpur zone, is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal, a landlocked country of Southeast Asia. The district, with Charikot as its district headquarters, covers an area of 2,191 km² and has a population (2001) of 204,229.

Mention of Dolkha brings to mind the much-revered shrine of Dolkha Bhimsen, the town's main temple devoted to the supporter divinity of merchants. Dolkha is also famous as the place where Nepal's first silver coins were casted in the 1540's. As offspring of traders with a long history in Lhasa, we were chiefly interested in the fact that Dolkha was a main junction on the old trade route to Tibet. So, with these thoughts in our minds, the comprehensive family, including a whole energetic bunch of nephews and nieces, packed into a reserved bus and set out for a family trip to Dolkha.

The Arniko Highway that traveling on follows the historic foot trail to Tibet. Named after the 13th-century artist who introduce Nepal's pagoda design into China, it ends at the Chinese border at the foot of the Himalaya in the north. Dolkha (population 13,000) was evocative of the significant section of Kathmandu, with its streets wrinkled with houses and dotted with temples. Its medieval history is one of trade with Tibet. Local merchants transported goods to and from Lhasa, and there were checkpoints all along the route up to the border to provide security and collect taxes. Dolkha made metal images, utensils, cloth and blankets for export. Chronicles also reveal that authority over the town changed hands between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur during the centuries.

Dolkha. Bhimsen Temple :

This Dolkha Bhimsen temple attracts pilgrims from all over Nepal. The deity is famed not only as a protector of merchants, but also as a forerunner of national events. It is said that when dreadful changes are about to occur in the country, "sweat" appears on the idol, and propitiatory offerings are rushed in from Kathmandu.
