Birganj sub-metropolitan municipality (2001 census: 112,484) is a border town in southern Nepal, 190 km west of Kathmandu, 2 km north of the border of the Indian state of Bihar.
As an entry point to Nepal from Patna and Calcutta it is also known as the gateway to Nepal. The town has significant economic importance for Nepal as a large part of goods enter Nepal through Birganj via Raxaul on the Indian side.
Birgunj is situated about 3 KM from the Indian northern border Raxaul. Majority of all the foreign goods shipped to Nepal by sea go through Calcutta-Haldia Port to Raxaul to Birgunj then reach to main cities like Kathmandu. Hence Birgunj is an important land entry point for goods to Nepal.
Many multi lingual and multi ethnic groups can be found in this city. People here speak many languages such as the Nepali, Maithili, Newari. There are several languages spoken in the town including Bhojpuri, Nepali, Maithili, Newari, Marwari and Hindi. It is the biggest city in Narayani zone and the headquarters of Parsa district.
Birganj is a major business centre of Nepal, especially for trade with India. Important industries are sugar refinery, cigarette manufacture and fish-breeding.
